Toilets with Drinking Water in Australia: what the data shows

Australia records 2,862 public toilets with drinking water on site. New South Wales holds the most at 1,000 — 35% of the national figure — ahead of Queensland (620) and Victoria (552). The smallest recorded total is Australian Capital Territory, with 32. They sit in 1,638 named towns across 1,665 recorded areas.

The heaviest concentrations are around Corowa (14), Cronulla (13) and Rottnest Island (13). Those 3 account for 40 of the 2,862; a further 1,075 towns record exactly one. The single busiest is Corowa, NSW.

The list takes in Galaxy Park at 25 Betula Terrace, Lynwood Park, Prospect Estate Reserve and McKenzie Reserve. Around Corowa the listings run to Aerodrome, Lions Riverside Park and Rowers Park. Further afield the map records Waratah Park Basketball Stadium (NSW) and Maybe Street (NSW).

Most sit in parks and reserves (1,383), with 380 sporting grounds, 180 community buildings and 107 shopping centres. Across the set the listings cover 17 of the 17 kinds of site the map names. A further 273 are filed under the map's catch-all "Other" category. Set against the 24,446 listings across Australia, that is a 12% share, rising to 9% among the 24-hour listings.

2,259 of the 2,862 are recorded as wheelchair accessible — among them Henry Lawson Bicentennial Park and Kalgoorlie-Boulder Airport. 80 are Changing Places facilities, with an adult-sized change table and a hoist — among them Casuarina Aquatic & Leisure Centre and Brisbane Airport Domestic Terminal. 116 open with an MLAK key, the national Master Locksmiths Access Key — among them Pit Paddock and Rymill Park. 75 need a key from the operator instead, which means finding whoever holds it before you arrive. 1,053 of the 2,862 have a baby-change table, and 1,022 of those sit at a site that is also wheelchair accessible.

976 of the 2,862 are published as open 24 hours — including Derby Trail Head and Miller Park. 728 open in daylight hours only, 286 list variable hours and 42 follow the host venue's hours. Where set times are published, the earliest opening is 2:30am at Sydney Airport - International Terminal and the latest closing is 11:56pm at Beerwah Railway Station. 91 are shown as closed on Mondays. 1,116 publish no weekly hours at all, so treat those as unknown rather than open.

27 of the 2,862 charge for entry; the rest are free — the charging ones being Mooroolbark Station and Peppertree Park. Drinking water means a tap, bubbler or refill station recorded at the site. Councils turn some off over winter or under water restrictions without the dataset changing, and none of these are recorded as tested or treated. All of the counts above are read from the National Public Toilet Map rather than checked in person.
