Toilets with an Ambulant Cubicle in Australia: what the data shows
The National Public Toilet Map records 2,143 public toilets with an ambulant cubicle across Australia. New South Wales holds the most at 686 — 32% of the national figure — ahead of Victoria (521) and Queensland (421). The smallest recorded total is Australian Capital Territory, with 10. They sit in 1,372 named towns across 1,395 recorded areas.
Melbourne (21), Coffs Harbour (12) and Hamilton (12) carry the most between them. Those 3 account for 45 of the 2,143; a further 961 towns record exactly one. The single busiest is Melbourne, VIC.
They include McKenzie Reserve on Anzac Avenue, Casuarina Aquatic & Leisure Centre, Derby Trail Head and Frankston Memorial Park. Around Melbourne the listings run to Alexandra Park, Observatory Precinct and Queen Victoria Gardens. Further afield the map records Caltex Dayton (WA) and Flintwood Crescent Park (QLD).
Most sit in parks and reserves (929), with 212 shopping centres, 181 sporting grounds and 136 community buildings. Across the set the listings cover 17 of the 17 kinds of site the map names. A further 246 are filed under the map's catch-all "Other" category. They are 9% of the 24,446 public toilets recorded across Australia, and 6% of the round-the-clock ones.
1,951 of the 2,143 are recorded as wheelchair accessible — including Burrill Lake Lions Park and Alexandra Park West. 105 are Changing Places facilities, with an adult-sized change table and a hoist — among them Bolton Park and Brisbane Airport Domestic Terminal. 129 open with an MLAK key, the national Master Locksmiths Access Key — among them Volunteer Marine Rescue Tower and Kevin Walsh Oval. 40 need a key from the operator instead, which means finding whoever holds it before you arrive. 1,170 of the 2,143 have a baby-change table, and 1,132 of those sit at a site that is also wheelchair accessible.
713 of the 2,143 are published as open 24 hours — such as Fraser Venture Ferry Landing and Salisbury Street. 558 open in daylight hours only, 104 list variable hours and 41 follow the host venue's hours. Where set times are published, the earliest opening is 1:30am at Hamilton Cinema and the latest closing is 11:59pm at Fairfield Forum. 22 are shown as closed on Mondays. 747 publish no weekly hours at all, so treat those as unknown rather than open.
16 of the 2,143 charge for entry; the rest are free — the charging ones being Mooroolbark Station and Peppertree Park. An ambulant cubicle is the narrower cubicle with grab rails on both sides for people who walk with support — a frame, crutches, arthritis — and it sits inside the ordinary men’s and women’s toilets rather than being the wheelchair-accessible room. The map records that one exists; it does not grade it against AS 1428.1. Every figure here is counted from the National Public Toilet Map, which operators and councils update at their own pace.
