24-Hour Public Toilets in Australia

Our directory records 11,233 public toilets across Australia as open 24 hours, of which 5,442 are also wheelchair accessible. That sounds like plenty, and in daylight it is — but “open 24 hours” and “a good place to stop at 3am” are not the same thing, and this page is honest about the difference.

Counts on this page come from our own database and were last checked on 21 August 2026. They are read from the published weekly opening hours, not from a physical overnight check.

Which toilets are genuinely open all night

A toilet counts as 24-hour here when its published weekly hours read “24 Hours”. On that measure 11,233 of the 24,446 toilets we list qualify. The catch is what kind of place they are. The single largest group — 4,938, or about 44% — are in parks and reserves. Those are genuinely unlocked around the clock, but they are also the ones most likely to be unlit, isolated and unstaffed once it gets dark.

By contrast, 1,154 are service stations. Those are the ones we would actually send you to overnight, and the next section explains why.

Service stations are the reliable night option

If you are driving late or travelling overnight, a staffed 24-hour service station is the most dependable toilet you can plan around. Someone is on shift, the forecourt is lit, the toilet is meant for travellers, and if something is wrong there is a person to tell. Our directory lists 1,154 service stations recorded as open 24 hours, and 428 of those are also wheelchair accessible.

Highway roadhouses and 24-hour fast-food outlets fall into the same category: predictable, lit and staffed. If you are mapping a long overnight drive, our highway rest areas guide covers the stops between towns, and the toilets with parking list is useful when you need somewhere you can pull straight into.

The honest safety caveat

We want to be straight about the limits of this data. Our records tell us a toilet’s published hours, its location and whether it is flagged accessible. They do not tell us whether it is lit at night, whether anyone is nearby, whether the door locks from the inside, or whether the surrounding area feels safe after dark. An isolated block that is technically “open 24 hours” can be a place you would not want to visit alone at night, and no dataset can score that for you.

So treat the 24-hour label as “the door is open”, not “this is a safe overnight stop”. When you can choose, choose a staffed, well-lit venue — a service station, roadhouse or fast-food outlet — over an unmanned toilet block. Trust your own read of a place over any flag on this site.

Frequently asked questions

How many public toilets in Australia are open 24 hours?
Our directory records 11,233 public toilets in Australia as open 24 hours, out of 24,446 in total. Of those, 5,442 are also recorded as wheelchair accessible and 1,154 are service stations. That count comes from the published weekly hours, so it captures places listed as “24 Hours” rather than places we have physically checked overnight.
Are 24-hour public toilets safe to use at night?
We cannot promise that, and we will not pretend otherwise. Our data does not record lighting, whether anyone is on site, or how safe a location feels after dark. Around 44% of the 24-hour toilets we list — 4,938 of them — are in parks and reserves, which are often unlit and unstaffed at night. For an overnight stop we would point you to a staffed 24-hour service station instead.
Which 24-hour toilets are the most reliable overnight?
Staffed service stations and roadhouses. Our directory lists 1,154 service stations recorded as open 24 hours, and 428 of those are also wheelchair accessible. Because someone is on shift and the forecourt is lit, a 24-hour servo is a more dependable and safer overnight option than an isolated toilet block.
Do I need a key for a 24-hour accessible toilet?
Sometimes. A number of accessible toilets are locked outside staffed hours and open with a Master Locksmiths Access Key (MLAK). If you rely on accessible facilities overnight, an MLAK is worth having. See our guide on how to get an MLAK key, and browse our accessible and MLAK toilets hub.
