Baby Changing Facilities and Parents’ Rooms in Australia
Our directory flags 4,821 public toilets across Australia as having a baby change table, and 4,591 of those are also wheelchair accessible. That is a useful shortlist — but the flag tells you a table exists and nothing more, and only 325 sites record a dedicated parents' room (a private baby care room rather than a fold-down bench) — so this guide is honest about what to check before you rely on one.
Counts come from our own database and were last checked on 21 August 2026.
What the “baby change” flag can and can’t tell you
This is the honest bit that parenting forums complain no map gets right. A “baby change” flag means one thing: a change table is recorded at that location. It does not tell you:
- whether there is a toilet in the same room, or whether you have to leave your baby to use one;
- whether a pram will fit beside the table, or the room is a tight single cubicle;
- whether the table is a proper fold-down unit or a flimsy shelf;
- whether it is clean, stocked or in working order right now.
So treat the flag as “a change table exists here” and use the rest of this page to work out whether the place is likely to be a full parents’ room or just a bench on a wall.
What a good parents’ room has
The difference between a proper parents’ room and a fold-down bench is enormous when you are on your own with a baby and a pram. The best rooms — reliably found in large shopping centres — have most of the following.
- A change table at a safe, stable height — the best rooms have one that folds down solidly, not a flimsy shelf.
- A toilet inside the room, so you are not leaving a baby on a table to duck to a cubicle next door.
- Enough floor space to fit a pram in beside the table without blocking the door.
- A basin with warm water at a reachable height, for washing hands and rinsing bottles.
- A comfortable chair for feeding, ideally in a screened nook.
- A nappy bin, hooks for your bag, and — in the best parents’ rooms — a bottle warmer or microwave.
Pram access
A change table is no use if you cannot get the pram to it. Our data does not record doorway widths, whether the room is on a level a lift reaches, or how much floor space is inside — so pram-friendliness is the one thing you have to judge on the ground. As a rule of thumb, a dedicated parents’ room in a shopping centre, airport or department store is designed for prams; a change bench inside a standard public toilet block usually is not.
If step-free access matters, a large centre with lifts is a safer bet than a suburban toilet block with a step at the door.

Frequently asked questions
- How many public toilets in Australia have baby changing facilities?
- Our directory flags 4,821 public toilets as having a baby change table, and 4,591 of those are also recorded as wheelchair accessible. The flag records only that a change table exists — it does not tell you whether there is a toilet in the same room, whether a pram fits, or how clean the room is kept.
- Does a “baby change” listing mean there is a full parents’ room?
- Not necessarily. “Baby change” only means a change table is recorded at that site — it might be a full parents' room with a toilet, basin and feeding chair, or a fold-down bench in a standard cubicle. 325 sites do record a dedicated baby care room, and those listings say so, but A missing “parents' room” note means “not recorded”, not “not there”, so check the venue for anything more.
- Where can I find a parents’ room with a pram-friendly space?
- Large shopping centres are the most reliable: they concentrate proper parents’ rooms with space for a pram, a toilet inside, and often a feeding area. Major airports, department stores and big supermarkets are the next best bet. Our family-friendly toilets guide and the per-suburb baby-changing lists are the quickest way to find them near you.
- Are baby change tables in men’s toilets too?
- Increasingly yes, and the best facilities are unisex parents’ rooms that any carer can use. Our data does not record which room a change table sits in, so if that matters to you, a signed unisex parents’ room — common in shopping centres — is the safest choice.
