Cafe and Food Outlet Toilets in Australia: what the data shows
450 of the public toilets on the national map are at cafes and food outlets. New South Wales holds the most at 256 — 57% of the national figure — ahead of Victoria (90) and Western Australia (39). The smallest recorded total is Northern Territory, with 5. They sit in 322 named towns across 324 recorded areas.
The largest clusters are at Dubbo (13), Hornsby (8) and Blacktown (7). Those 3 account for 28 of the 450; a further 254 towns record exactly one. The single busiest is Dubbo, NSW.
The list takes in Crown at 8 Whiteman Street, McDonald's Ascot, McDonald's Oak Park and Trade Coast Central. Around Dubbo the listings run to Macquarie Inn, Red Rooster Dubbo and Western Star Hotel. Further afield the map records Alpine Larder Cafe (NSW) and Wangi District Workers Club (NSW).
Of the 450, 383 are recorded as wheelchair accessible, 219 have a baby-change table and 380 have parking on site. That is 2% of every public toilet recorded across Australia (24,446 in total), and 1% of those open 24 hours.
383 of the 450 are recorded as wheelchair accessible — such as KFC Muswellbrook and Emu Point Cafe. 2 are Changing Places facilities, with an adult-sized change table and a hoist — among them By the Bay Cafe & Grill, Carrs Park. 4 open with an MLAK key, the national Master Locksmiths Access Key — among them Cloud 9 and Toronto Playground. 17 need a key from the operator instead, which means finding whoever holds it before you arrive. 219 of the 450 have a baby-change table, and 213 of those sit at a site that is also wheelchair accessible.
109 of the 450 are published as open 24 hours — among them McDonald's Narellan and McDonald's Nerang. 29 open in daylight hours only, 18 list variable hours and 21 follow the host venue's hours. Where set times are published, the earliest opening is 12am at Sealevel Restaurant and Bar and the latest closing is 11:55pm at Rutherford Hotel. 3 are shown as closed on Mondays. 65 publish no weekly hours at all, so treat those as unknown rather than open.
3 of the 450 charge for entry; the rest are free — the charging ones being Lynd Oasis Roadhouse and Packsaddle Roadhouse. A facility recorded at a food outlet is on private premises. The dataset lists it as publicly usable, but the operator sets the terms and may expect a purchase. These numbers come straight from the National Public Toilet Map, so confirm anything you are relying on before you set out.
