Train Station Toilets in Australia: what the data shows
622 of the public toilets on the national map are at train stations. New South Wales holds the most at 306 — 49% of the national figure — ahead of Victoria (162) and Queensland (114). The smallest recorded total is Australian Capital Territory, with 1. Northern Territory and Tasmania record none at all. They sit in 551 named towns across 559 recorded areas.
The largest clusters are at Sydney (5), Melbourne (4) and Perth (4). Those 3 account for 13 of the 622; a further 494 towns record exactly one. The single busiest is Sydney, NSW.
The list takes in Wynnum Railway Station on Thorne Street, Fairfield Train Station, Bentleigh Station and Waurn Ponds Railway Station. Around Sydney the listings run to Central Station Grand Concourse, Town Hall Train Station and St James Train Station. Further afield the map records Clayton Station (VIC) and Watsonia Shopping Centre (VIC).
Of the 622, 453 are recorded as wheelchair accessible, 83 are published as open 24 hours and 193 have a baby-change table. That is 3% of every public toilet recorded across Australia (24,446 in total), and 1% of those open 24 hours.
453 of the 622 are recorded as wheelchair accessible — such as Kingswood Train Station and Clifton Hill Train Station. 1 is a Changing Places facility, with an adult-sized change table and a hoist: Bendigo Station. 28 open with an MLAK key, the national Master Locksmiths Access Key — among them Bondi Junction Train Station and Ashfield Train Station. 50 need a key from the operator instead, which means finding whoever holds it before you arrive. 193 of the 622 have a baby-change table, and 182 of those sit at a site that is also wheelchair accessible.
83 of the 622 are published as open 24 hours — among them Orange Train Station and Elizabeth Interchange. 38 open in daylight hours only, 143 list variable hours and 39 follow the host venue's hours. Where set times are published, the earliest opening is 3am at Upper Ferntree Gully Station and the latest closing is 11:59pm at Ballarat Railway Station. 13 are shown as closed on Mondays. 194 publish no weekly hours at all, so treat those as unknown rather than open.
5 of the 622 charge for entry; the rest are free — the charging ones being Mooroolbark Station and Mernda Train Station. Station toilets are frequently inside the paid area, past the gates. The dataset records the facility at the station address and does not distinguish concourse from platform. These numbers come straight from the National Public Toilet Map, so confirm anything you are relying on before you set out.
