Sports Ground Toilets in Australia: what the data shows
Australia records 2,099 public toilets at sporting grounds. New South Wales holds the most at 1,023 — 49% of the national figure — ahead of Victoria (340) and Western Australia (227). The smallest recorded total is Northern Territory, with 25. They sit in 1,340 named towns across 1,362 recorded areas.
The heaviest concentrations are around Rooty Hill (21), Sutherland (12) and Barden Ridge (9). Those 3 account for 42 of the 2,099; a further 947 towns record exactly one. The single busiest is Rooty Hill, NSW.
Among them are Lynwood Park on Rangers Road, Wombarra Rock Pool, Bridgetown Sports Ground and Wyatt Park - Athletic Field. Around Rooty Hill the listings run to Angus Memorial Park, Blacktown International Sports Park - Baseball Grand Stand and Harry Dennison Park. Further afield the map records Dampier Reserve (SA) and Streaky Bay Town Oval (SA).
Of the 2,099, 1,316 have parking on site, 1,137 are recorded as wheelchair accessible and 380 have drinking water. Set against the 24,446 listings across Australia, that is a 9% share, rising to 5% among the 24-hour listings.
1,137 of the 2,099 are recorded as wheelchair accessible — among them Waratah Park Basketball Stadium and Manly Warringah Baseball Club - Aquatic Reserve. 26 are Changing Places facilities, with an adult-sized change table and a hoist — among them Majors Bay Reserve - Changing Places and Kevin Walsh Oval. 85 open with an MLAK key, the national Master Locksmiths Access Key — among them The Ridge Fields 9 & 10 and Canowindra Sports Complex. 193 need a key from the operator instead, which means finding whoever holds it before you arrive. 295 of the 2,099 have a baby-change table, and 281 of those sit at a site that is also wheelchair accessible.
506 of the 2,099 are published as open 24 hours — including Bunguyan Recreation Reserve and Cygnet Recreation Ground. 331 open in daylight hours only, 749 list variable hours and 79 follow the host venue's hours. Where set times are published, the earliest opening is 4:30am at Freshwater Beach Surf Life Saving Club and the latest closing is 11pm at Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club. 79 are shown as closed on Mondays. 1,110 publish no weekly hours at all, so treat those as unknown rather than open.
6 of the 2,099 charge for entry; the rest are free — the charging ones being North Park Club Rooms and Bylong Community Sports Ground. Ovals, courts, clubrooms and grandstands all land in this category. A good number are unlocked only for training nights and fixtures, so a weekday visit is the least reliable. All of the counts above are read from the National Public Toilet Map rather than checked in person.
