Service Station Toilets in Australia: what the data shows
The National Public Toilet Map records 2,460 public toilets at service stations across Australia. New South Wales holds the most at 718 — 29% of the national figure — ahead of Victoria (536) and Queensland (515). The smallest recorded total is Australian Capital Territory, with 18. They sit in 1,664 named towns across 1,710 recorded areas.
Coffs Harbour (8), Muswellbrook (8) and Epping (7) carry the most between them. Those 3 account for 23 of the 2,460; a further 1,134 towns record exactly one. The single busiest is Coffs Harbour, NSW.
Named listings include BP Victor Harbor at 310 Port Elliot Road, BP Mid Western, BP Southern Cross and BP Kookas Central. Around Coffs Harbour the listings run to Shell Coles Express Coffs Harbour, Caltex Coffs Harbour and BP Coffs Harbour. Further afield the map records BP Express Tower (NSW) and Burwood - BP (VIC).
Of the 2,460, 1,154 are published as open 24 hours, 1,684 have parking on site and 642 are recorded as wheelchair accessible. They are 10% of the 24,446 public toilets recorded across Australia, and 10% of the round-the-clock ones.
642 of the 2,460 are recorded as wheelchair accessible — including Caltex Dayton and Caltex Vincent. 2 are Changing Places facilities, with an adult-sized change table and a hoist: BP The Lakes and BP Ballina Highway Travel Centre. 3 open with an MLAK key, the national Master Locksmiths Access Key — among them BP Service Station Campbelltown. 33 need a key from the operator instead, which means finding whoever holds it before you arrive. 117 of the 2,460 have a baby-change table, and 100 of those sit at a site that is also wheelchair accessible.
1,154 of the 2,460 are published as open 24 hours — such as BP Steel River and Caltex Glenfield. 96 open in daylight hours only, 18 list variable hours and 2 follow the host venue's hours. Where set times are published, the earliest opening is 2am at BP Moranbah and the latest closing is 11:59pm at EG Gregory Hills. 11 are shown as closed on Mondays. 123 publish no weekly hours at all, so treat those as unknown rather than open.
1 of the 2,460 charges for entry; the rest are free: Billabong Roadhouse. A service station toilet is recorded against the forecourt site. Access almost always depends on the station being open and staffed, and the published hours below are the station's rather than the toilet block's. Every figure here is counted from the National Public Toilet Map, which operators and councils update at their own pace.
