Rest Area Toilets in Australia: what the data shows
The National Public Toilet Map records 602 public toilets at highway rest areas across Australia. New South Wales holds the most at 269 — 45% of the national figure — ahead of Queensland (134) and Western Australia (84). The smallest recorded total is South Australia, with 11. Australian Capital Territory records none at all. They sit in 499 named towns across 502 recorded areas.
Broken Hill (6), Coonabarabran (5) and Wilcannia (5) carry the most between them. Those 3 account for 16 of the 602; a further 417 towns record exactly one. The single busiest is Broken Hill, NSW.
Among them are Round Hill Rest Area Eastbound at 19059A Barrier Highway, Meilman East Rest Area, Seven Trees Rest Area and Rest Area. Around Broken Hill the listings run to Thackaringa Hills Rest Area, West Broken Hill Rest Area Eastbound and Mount Gipps Rest Area Eastbound. Further afield the map records Coominglah Range Rest Area (QLD) and Isaac River (QLD).
Of the 602, 531 have parking on site, 541 are published as open 24 hours and 64 have drinking water. They are 2% of the 24,446 public toilets recorded across Australia, and 5% of the round-the-clock ones.
331 of the 602 are recorded as wheelchair accessible — including Bentons Hill Rest Area (Southbound) and Cornish Rest Area. 3 need a key from the operator instead, which means finding whoever holds it before you arrive. 42 of the 602 have a baby-change table, and 38 of those sit at a site that is also wheelchair accessible.
541 of the 602 are published as open 24 hours — such as Batman Bridge Rest Area and Coles Bay Rest Area. 33 open in daylight hours only and 13 list variable hours. Where set times are published, the earliest opening is 6am at Lions Club Rest Area and the latest closing is 10pm at Kelly Street. 2 are shown as closed on Mondays. 46 publish no weekly hours at all, so treat those as unknown rather than open.
1 of the 602 charges for entry; the rest are free: Kondinin Rest Area. Rest area entries come from the highway stopping places in the National Public Toilet Map. The dataset records the toilet, not the bay: it does not say whether a site is signposted for heavy vehicles, how long you may stay, or whether the stop is lit at night. Every figure here is counted from the National Public Toilet Map, which operators and councils update at their own pace.
