New South Wales holds the most at 2,713 — 28% of the national figure — ahead of Victoria (2,629) and Queensland (2,075). The smallest recorded total is Northern Territory, with 110. They sit in 4,446 named towns across 4,647 recorded areas.

Adelaide (27), Lake Eildon (20) and Eildon (19) carry the most between them. Those 3 account for 66 of the 9,681; a further 2,295 towns record exactly one. The single busiest is Adelaide, SA.
