Park Toilets in other states

Park Toilets in Tasmania: what the data shows

Tasmania records 398 of Australia's 9,681 public toilets in parks and reserves — 4% of the national total. That makes it the sixth-largest state total, behind New South Wales (2,713), Victoria (2,629), Queensland (2,075), South Australia (872) and Western Australia (760). They sit in 239 named towns.

Southwest (10), Coles Bay (7) and Mount William (7) carry the most between them. Those 3 account for 24 of the 398; a further 151 towns record exactly one.

Named listings include O'Neills Park at 1416 Claude Road, North East Rock, Picnic Point and Eddington Street. Around Southwest the listings run to Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park - Nelson Falls, Melaleuca Airfield and Mount Anne Track.

Of the 398, 191 have parking on site, 32 have drinking water and 206 are recorded as wheelchair accessible. They are 41% of the 966 public toilets recorded in Tasmania, and 48% of the round-the-clock ones.

206 of the 398 are recorded as wheelchair accessible — including Roseneath Reserve and City Park. 1 is a Changing Places facility, with an adult-sized change table and a hoist: Simmons Park. 1 opens with an MLAK key, the national Master Locksmiths Access Key: Kangaroo Bay. 68 of the 398 have a baby-change table, and 64 of those sit at a site that is also wheelchair accessible.

292 of the 398 are published as open 24 hours — such as Apsley Waterhole & Lookout Track and Liffey Falls Track. 66 open in daylight hours only, 10 list variable hours and 2 follow the host venue's hours. Where set times are published, the earliest opening is 5:30am at Mersey Bluff Foreshore Park Changerooms and the latest closing is 8pm at Waverley Lake Park. 3 are shown as closed on Mondays. 77 publish no weekly hours at all, so treat those as unknown rather than open.

2 of the 398 charge for entry; the rest are free: Tasmanian Arboretum and Cataract Gorge Reserve - First Basin. This is the largest category in the dataset by a wide margin, and it stretches from a single pan in a pocket park to a serviced block in a regional park. Many are locked at dusk even where no closing time is published. Every figure here is counted from the National Public Toilet Map, which operators and councils update at their own pace.
