Toilets with Parking in Tasmania: what the data shows
Tasmania records 520 of Australia's 15,787 public toilets with parking at the site — 3% of the national total. That makes it the sixth-largest state total, behind New South Wales (5,446), Victoria (3,708), Queensland (2,675), Western Australia (1,769) and South Australia (1,309). They sit in 251 named towns.
Devonport (14), Ulverstone (13) and Kingston (10) carry the most between them. Those 3 account for 37 of the 520; a further 150 towns record exactly one.
The list takes in Murray Street at 11 Murray Street, O'Neills Park, Derby Trail Head and Mt Barrow Discovery Centre. Around Devonport the listings run to Shell Coles Express Devonport, Coles Devonport and Aikenhead Point - Vietnam Veterans Picnic Area.
The mix runs to 191 parks and reserves, 65 service stations, 41 car parks and 34 shopping centres. Across the set the listings cover 15 of the 17 kinds of site the map names. A further 62 are filed under the map's catch-all "Other" category. They are 54% of the 966 public toilets recorded in Tasmania, and 45% of the round-the-clock ones.
352 of the 520 are recorded as wheelchair accessible — including Ranelagh Playground and Derby Mountain Bike Trail. 4 are Changing Places facilities, with an adult-sized change table and a hoist — among them Kingborough Community Hub and Greens Beach. 3 open with an MLAK key, the national Master Locksmiths Access Key — among them Kangaroo Bay and Argyle Street Car Park. 1 needs a key from the operator instead, which means finding whoever holds it before you arrive. 135 of the 520 have a baby-change table, and 130 of those sit at a site that is also wheelchair accessible.
270 of the 520 are published as open 24 hours — such as Esplanade - West and Batman Bridge Rest Area. 105 open in daylight hours only, 12 list variable hours and 10 follow the host venue's hours. Where set times are published, the earliest opening is 4am at United Service Station Gagebrook and the latest closing is 11pm at BP St Helens. 2 are shown as closed on Mondays. 120 publish no weekly hours at all, so treat those as unknown rather than open.
2 of the 520 charge for entry; the rest are free: Tasmanian Arboretum and Cataract Gorge Reserve - First Basin. Parking here means the dataset records parking at the site. It does not separate a dedicated car park from a few roadside bays, and it says nothing about accessible bays, height limits or whether a caravan or a rigid truck will fit. Every figure here is counted from the National Public Toilet Map, which operators and councils update at their own pace.
