Toilets with an Ambulant Cubicle in Victoria: what the data shows
Victoria records 521 of Australia's 2,143 public toilets with an ambulant cubicle — 24% of the national total. That makes it the second-largest state total, behind New South Wales (686). They sit in 289 named towns.
Melbourne (21), Frankston (10) and Mildura (9) carry the most between them. Those 3 account for 40 of the 521; a further 182 towns record exactly one.
They include McKenzie Reserve on Anzac Avenue, Frankston Memorial Park, Hamilton Library and Flagstaff Gardens. Around Melbourne the listings run to Alexandra Park, Observatory Precinct and Queen Victoria Gardens.
The mix runs to 203 parks and reserves, 68 shopping centres, 48 community buildings and 34 sporting grounds. Across the set the listings cover 16 of the 17 kinds of site the map names. A further 76 are filed under the map's catch-all "Other" category. They are 9% of the 5,803 public toilets recorded in Victoria, and 6% of the round-the-clock ones.
480 of the 521 are recorded as wheelchair accessible — including Ewing Park Sports Ground and Ballarat Botanical Gardens - North. 38 are Changing Places facilities, with an adult-sized change table and a hoist — among them Latrobe City Service Centre Traralgon and Hargreaves Street Multi Storey Car Park. 36 open with an MLAK key, the national Master Locksmiths Access Key — among them Westfield Knox and Ruffey Lake Park 2. 8 need a key from the operator instead, which means finding whoever holds it before you arrive. 291 of the 521 have a baby-change table, and 282 of those sit at a site that is also wheelchair accessible.
173 of the 521 are published as open 24 hours — such as Botanic Gardens and Mount Buninyong. 134 open in daylight hours only, 38 list variable hours and 13 follow the host venue's hours. Where set times are published, the earliest opening is 1:30am at Hamilton Cinema and the latest closing is 11pm at Ascot Vale Leisure Centre. 6 are shown as closed on Mondays. 192 publish no weekly hours at all, so treat those as unknown rather than open.
2 of the 521 charge for entry; the rest are free: Mooroolbark Station and Mernda Train Station. An ambulant cubicle is the narrower cubicle with grab rails on both sides for people who walk with support — a frame, crutches, arthritis — and it sits inside the ordinary men’s and women’s toilets rather than being the wheelchair-accessible room. The map records that one exists; it does not grade it against AS 1428.1. Every figure here is counted from the National Public Toilet Map, which operators and councils update at their own pace.
