Beach Toilets in Victoria: what the data shows
97 public toilets at beaches are recorded in Victoria, out of 486 nationally. That makes it the third-largest state total, behind New South Wales (133) and Western Australia (109). They sit in 64 named towns.
The heaviest concentrations are around Mornington (6), Ocean Grove (4) and Sorrento (4). Those 3 account for 14 of the 97; a further 43 towns record exactly one.
They include Sirens Rest Beach on Esplanade, Port Melbourne Beach, Smiths Beach Road and Urqubluff Reserve. Around Mornington the listings run to Scout Hall Beach, Mills Beach - South and Fishermans Beach 1.
Of the 97, 35 have a shower, 64 have parking on site and 49 are recorded as wheelchair accessible. Set against the 5,803 listings in Victoria, that is a 2% share, rising to 2% among the 24-hour listings.
49 of the 97 are recorded as wheelchair accessible — among them Bancoora Beach Breamlea and Eastern Beach. 3 are Changing Places facilities, with an adult-sized change table and a hoist — among them Portarlington Beach and Point Leo Foreshore. 2 open with an MLAK key, the national Master Locksmiths Access Key — among them Four Kings Changing Place. 12 of the 97 have a baby-change table, and 11 of those sit at a site that is also wheelchair accessible.
62 of the 97 are published as open 24 hours — including Wyperfeld National Park - Western Beach 2 and Ocean Grove Main Beach. 29 open in daylight hours only. Where set times are published, the earliest opening is 5:30am at Brighton Beach and the latest closing is 9pm at Birdwood Street Foreshore. 29 publish no weekly hours at all, so treat those as unknown rather than open.
1 of the 97 charges for entry; the rest are free: Middle Park Beach. Beach blocks are recorded at the foreshore. Councils close some of them out of season and reopen them for summer patrols, which the published hours in the dataset rarely capture. All of the counts above are read from the National Public Toilet Map rather than checked in person.
