Unisex Public Toilets in other states

Unisex Public Toilets in Western Australia: what the data shows

Western Australia records 639 of Australia's 6,445 public toilets recorded as unisex — 10% of the national total. That makes it the fourth-largest state total, behind Victoria (1,854), New South Wales (1,735) and Queensland (1,093). They sit in 375 named towns.

Perth (16), Hamilton Hill (9) and Albany (8) carry the most between them. Those 3 account for 33 of the 639; a further 242 towns record exactly one.

They include Quarry Park Ablutions - Meadow Springs, Kalgoorlie-Boulder Airport, Iluka Foreshore Park and Butterworth Park. Around Perth the listings run to Perth Train Station Yagan Square, Elizabeth Quay Station and Elizabeth Quay.

The mix runs to 232 parks and reserves, 47 sporting grounds, 37 service stations and 33 highway rest areas. Across the set the listings cover 16 of the 17 kinds of site the map names. A further 107 are filed under the map's catch-all "Other" category. They are 23% of the 2,767 public toilets recorded in Western Australia, and 21% of the round-the-clock ones.

501 of the 639 are recorded as wheelchair accessible — including Caltex Dayton and Five Rivers Lookout. 11 are Changing Places facilities, with an adult-sized change table and a hoist — among them Mary Carroll Park - Eudoria Street and Jo Wheatley All Abilities Play Space. 12 open with an MLAK key, the national Master Locksmiths Access Key — among them Parnham Reserve and Deep Water Point Reserve. 8 need a key from the operator instead, which means finding whoever holds it before you arrive. 168 of the 639 have a baby-change table, and 151 of those sit at a site that is also wheelchair accessible.

288 of the 639 are published as open 24 hours — such as Cnr Glover And Dunn Sts and Rotary Park. 120 open in daylight hours only, 37 list variable hours and 3 follow the host venue's hours. Where set times are published, the earliest opening is 3am at Perth Airport - Terminal 4 and the latest closing is 11pm at Beecroft Park. 13 are shown as closed on Mondays. 186 publish no weekly hours at all, so treat those as unknown rather than open.

4 of the 639 charge for entry; the rest are free — the charging ones being Cape Keraudren and Kondinin Rest Area. Unisex means the dataset records an all-gender facility at the site. Some of these sites also record separate men's and women's rooms alongside; the count of those is given above, and where it is low the listing is a single self-contained cubicle. Every figure here is counted from the National Public Toilet Map, which operators and councils update at their own pace.
