Unisex Public Toilets in other states

Unisex Public Toilets in New South Wales: what the data shows

Of the 6,445 public toilets recorded as unisex on the national map, 1,735 are in New South Wales. That makes it the second-largest state total, behind Victoria (1,854). They sit in 982 named towns.

The largest clusters are at Muswellbrook (15), Cronulla (11) and Manly (11). Those 3 account for 37 of the 1,735; a further 591 towns record exactly one.

Named listings include Eskbank St on Eskbank Street, Kingsgrove Avenue Reserve, Round Hill Rest Area Eastbound and Coomba Park Aquatic Gardens. Around Muswellbrook the listings run to KFC Muswellbrook, Ampol Muswellbrook and Mobil Service Station Muswellbrook.

Most sit in parks and reserves (716), with 183 highway rest areas, 126 sporting grounds and 92 shopping centres. Across the set the listings cover 17 of the 17 kinds of site the map names. A further 155 are filed under the map's catch-all "Other" category. That is 23% of every public toilet recorded in New South Wales (7,651 in total), and 27% of those open 24 hours.

1,323 of the 1,735 are recorded as wheelchair accessible — such as Hurstville Museum and Gallery and Seven Trees Rest Area. 22 are Changing Places facilities, with an adult-sized change table and a hoist — among them Majors Bay Reserve - Changing Places and Ollie Webb Reserve. 85 open with an MLAK key, the national Master Locksmiths Access Key — among them Burrill Lake Lions Park and Volunteer Marine Rescue Tower. 64 need a key from the operator instead, which means finding whoever holds it before you arrive. 544 of the 1,735 have a baby-change table, and 525 of those sit at a site that is also wheelchair accessible.

728 of the 1,735 are published as open 24 hours — among them Meilman East Rest Area and Eastern Hill Lookout. 417 open in daylight hours only, 72 list variable hours and 26 follow the host venue's hours. Where set times are published, the earliest opening is 12am at Sealevel Restaurant and Bar and the latest closing is 11:59pm at EG Gregory Hills. 25 are shown as closed on Mondays. 530 publish no weekly hours at all, so treat those as unknown rather than open.

6 of the 1,735 charge for entry; the rest are free — the charging ones being Brackens Hut and Goulburn Aquatic and Leisure Centre. Unisex means the dataset records an all-gender facility at the site. Some of these sites also record separate men's and women's rooms alongside; the count of those is given above, and where it is low the listing is a single self-contained cubicle. These numbers come straight from the National Public Toilet Map, so confirm anything you are relying on before you set out.
