MLAK key in Western Australia: cost, eligibility and where to apply

Western Australia has a Companion Card route, but it does not run through the MLAA. Companion Card WA is funded by the WA Government through the Department of Communities and administered by National Disability Services, and NDS has offered Companion Card holders a free MLAK.

Our directory records 30 MLAK-locked public toilets in Western Australia from the National Public Toilet Map — a locked accessible toilet you can only open with the key.

Scheme details checked 28 July 2026; the price on 21 August 2026. Toilet counts are live from our database.

What applies in Western Australia

Developmental Disability WA describes the NDS offer as a limited-time one, and the City of Stirling tells residents that Companion Card holders can receive a free key from NDS. The Companion Card WA site itself made no mention of MLAK when we checked, so we cannot confirm the offer is still open — ask NDS before you count on it. Everyone else in WA orders through MLAA or a participating locksmith.

How to apply — the route that works everywhere

  1. 1

    Check you are eligible

Confirm you have a disability, or written authority from a doctor, a disability organisation, a community health centre, or the owner or manager of a building with an accessible toilet.

  2. 2

    Gather your evidence

Have one of a Disability Card, a Mobility or Disability Parking Permit, a letter from your doctor, or a letter from a recognised disability organisation on hand.

  3. 3

    Order the key

Complete the Master Locksmiths Association national online order form, buy from a participating MLAA business member, or apply through your local council where one runs a scheme.

  4. 4

    Pay the price

Pay $64 excluding GST (the national online price from 1 July 2025), unless a council scheme or a Victorian or South Australian Companion Card offer provides the key free.

  5. 5

    Collect or receive your key

Collect the key over the counter, or have it posted to you, depending on how you ordered.
