What applies in Queensland

Several Queensland councils are widely reported to issue or lend keys locally, including free and short-loan arrangements. Their pages blocked our automated checks and we could not verify current terms first-hand, so we are not going to restate them here. Treat any council offer you read about elsewhere as unconfirmed and phone the council before you travel.

How to apply — the route that works everywhere

  1. 1

    Check you are eligible

Confirm you have a disability, or written authority from a doctor, a disability organisation, a community health centre, or the owner or manager of a building with an accessible toilet.

  2. 2

    Gather your evidence

Have one of a Disability Card, a Mobility or Disability Parking Permit, a letter from your doctor, or a letter from a recognised disability organisation on hand.

  3. 3

    Order the key

Complete the Master Locksmiths Association national online order form, buy from a participating MLAA business member, or apply through your local council where one runs a scheme.

  4. 4

    Pay the price

Pay $64 excluding GST (the national online price from 1 July 2025), unless a council scheme or a Victorian or South Australian Companion Card offer provides the key free.

  5. 5

    Collect or receive your key

Collect the key over the counter, or have it posted to you, depending on how you ordered.
